Colour and contrast review- Martha Clough

I found the politics of design specifically engaging on the section of colour; each colour described for its unique trademarks. It was particularly interested when there would be an overlap. For example, red being the significant colour of brides in china, and of happiness. However, it is widely known that rad is a colour of threat within Europe. From this I have learnt when using colour within my specification of graphic design, I should not use a colour to represent symbolism, or have any kind of image which is specifically interesting due to its colour, not the image. This is also evident, as from this chapter, I have similarly learnt that 8% of men and 0.5% of women are colour blind.

When selecting images, I have taken during editing, I will often turn up the saturation or down the saturation in order to make the audience feel a certain way. For example, turning the blue down in an image to display melancholy. It’s interesting when putting this into perspective of film as many people did not believe in colour film due to the basis it would be unremarkable to real life. This is a valid point, and probably the most interesting from this chapter; we, as designers, can manipulate the audience in whichever way you choose. Most of the time this will be for sales preposes. However, what I mainly take away from this is that as a designer I shouldn’t be trying to sell a feeling but make an image that asks questions to do with what it’s trying to evoke, not how its manipulating you.
